Microorganisms are the unsung heroes of our planet. Though invisible to the naked eye, the work they do is seen every day. From aiding in digestion to decomposing organic matter, these tiny organisms are indispensable to the balance of our ecosystems and the advancement of science and technology. It’s because of their importance that we are celebrating International Microorganism Day on September 17th. This day marks the anniversary of the first description of a single-celled organism in 1683 and the progress the scientific community has made in the study of microorganisms since then.
